Introduction to Adaptations
An adaptation is any trait, body part, body covering, bodily function, behavior, or life cycle that helps an animal survive in its environment. There are three basic types of adaptations in animals: structural, physiological and behavioral. Most organisms have combinations of all these types of adaptations.
- Physical Adaptations (Structural) are physical features that allow an animal to find and consume food, defend itself, and survive.
- Physical Adaptations (Physiological/Functional) are internal, cellular, or chemical changes within the body - such as developing immunity to disease, production of poisonous venom, or secreting slime - or changes to the function of receptor organs - such as vision, temperature regulation, hearing, or pain - that allow an animal to survive.
- Behavioral Adaptations are the learned or instinctive actions and behaviors - such as hibernation, migration, and hunting - animals exhibit in order to survive.
- Life Cycle Adaptations are any adaptations that affect an organism's life cycle, including its ability to reproduce, protect its young, and continue the species.
